Attending 4-5 basketball camps every summer growing up, I came to expect the same from each. I would be integrated with 250 other kids, play some pick-up games, do a few drills, and go home after about 3 ½ days. The instruction was nothing special and it felt more like a baby-sitting service. I knew I could offer something more beneficial than this. So in 2005, I founded Get The Edge Basketball. Get The Edge is dedicated to providing basketball instruction, resources and tools to aid young athletes in reaching their full potential. The last three years Get The Edge has been focused on Individual Instruction Courses which I still currently do but I'm extremely excited this year that we are adding our first Get The Edge Basketball Camp to be held at Lexington Christian Academy July 21st-24th.
Some ways I think our camp differs from others in the area and provides added benefits:
1. Coaching Staff - I have partnered with Richard Grier, who has coached and run camps for 10 years in this area, to produce the best possible camp in this region. I have sought out some of the best coaches in the state! The coaches who will be assisting us with the camp have either played college basketball or have extensive experience coaching the game. I have personally recruited people who I know understand the game and also have a passion for teaching it. Players will not get the feeling that somebody instructing them is there only to pick up a paycheck which is a feeling I had going to many camps growing up.
2. Limiting the number of kids - We have a priority to make this camp as personal as possible. When you are just after high numbers, the quality of instruction immediately goes down. We are limiting the number of campers to 75 per session. This will allow us to have a great coach to player ratio of about 7:1. Our focus is on offering excellent instruction and that is impossible if you allow 200-300 campers in.
3. Personal Touch - I attended over 75 camps across the country growing up, never once was I ever contacted outside of the camp during my regular season or any other time throughout the year. We are viewing Get The Edge Basketball Camp as a way to offer outstanding instruction but also as a relationship. Campers are not just going to show up and then in another 9 months receive a notice that we're ready to offer the camp again. We will be following up on our campers throughout the year to check on them and also to assist them in whatever basketball needs they might have. This truly will be separating our camp from any I know.
In addition - Campers will develop an understanding and ability of the fundamental skills of basketball, advanced skills in the area of ball-handling, dribbling, shooting, passing, defense and more, experience through individual daily competitions, team concepts through scrimmaging each day, connections with area coaches through low camper to coach ratio and much more. All campers will receive a camp shirt, basketball, practice plan and more.
